DESCRIPTION: On a porcelain blank from Germany (seen as early as 1898), one of Pickard’s best and most prolific artists, Maxwell Rean Klipphahn, brilliantly paints “Autumn Currants”.
The shape of this piece is unusual and very few are found in today’s worldwide market. The bowl rim is crimped to create three sections, each indentation accented with turned-up open loop handles.
The interior features the Autumn Currant design with colors representing the change of season. Red currants appear on stem against leaves in various hues of green, light brown and gold. Shadow leaves are found on the ground that transitions from light brown to pale orange and is an exceptional choice of complementary color.
The bowl’s exterior is of the same ground colors with a branch of red currants repeating three times around.
Klipphahn ‘Rean’ was known to be very imaginative which may explain the scattering of pink apple blossoms across the wide rim. It is unexpected yet flows into the design and perhaps a gentle reminder the spring blossom eventually turns to fall harvest.
Lavish amounts of gilding are found on the 5/8” wide rim and tri-handles. This piece shines with elegance under a glaze that is 120 years old.
The age of this piece shows ever so slightly. There is minimal gold loss and light scratches along the rim and handles; and scratches to the interior bottom. From a distance, the imperfections blend with the ground and design; under a magnifier, it is lightly scratched in two areas (see photos or please request additional).

WHY I LIKE IT: I have a great appreciation of Klipphahn’s work (and independent personality). Mixing red currants and apple blossoms on the same piece made me smile as the personality of this artist emerged through his work.
