Here is a sugar bowl and lid that are decorated with applied white ornament in really spectacular fashion. White scenes of the dipping of Achilles and a sacrifice to Peace are molded and applied to the surface, along with other events in Roman and Greek mythology and various swags and emblems. All these scenes are found in very closely matching designs on Wedgwood products, so much alike that only the tiniest details separate them. In fact, a sacrifice to Peace and the dipping of Achilles are sometimes also found together on Wedgwood pieces. It’s tempting to think that the potters at Warburton simply took impressions from a variety of Wedgwood jasper pieces and used them wholesale, without much thought. Note that some of the appliqués on this sugar bowl are not to the same scale. If they had been originally modeled by someone at Warburton for use on the same piece, they would have matched in size. So they were probably either modeled for a variety of other pieces and used together here, or copied from other potters and thrown together on the same piece. Very few Warburton pieces are marked. This bowl is not, but I do have the matching teapot, and its handle matches exactly the handle of a marked Warburton teapot, so I’m 99% certain this is by Warburton. I'd welcome discussion of this attribution, however. Condition is great except for a very noticeable chip off the rim of the bowl on one side that I intend to fix as soon as I get around to it. That’s the side you turn toward the wall. The sugar bowl is five and a quarter inches high and six inches long.
