Here is a Victorian period cup and saucer printed in light black outline and then hand-painted in colors to fill out the design. The colors are adapted from Imari porcelains, first imported from Japan and later developed as an original style by the British designers. Even though it’s somewhat stylized, the design is immediately readable from across the room: a stylized blue branch or tree. When you get closer you see the pink, red, yellow and green leaves and flowers—a very complicated and splashy pattern.
