Here is an antique porcelain set that’s in a shape John Twitchett calls “very unusual” and dates to the Duesbury/Kean period at Derby. It’s an octagonal cup and saucer, vibrant in its design. To me it’s reminiscent of rose medallion oriental porcelains, but really in a class of its own. There are oriental birds in panels surrounded with intricate branches and leaves. One can’t stop looking at it! The pattern is mesmerizing. Twitchett illustrates this shape with a different oriental-style design in his book “Derby Porcelain 1748-1848.” The saucer is five and a half inches across and the set has no chips or cracks, but there is some gilding wear to the rims.
