Here is a wonderful cup and saucer made by one of the preeminent factories of the 18th century. This set features classical columns and arches depicted as romanticized ruins in an Italianate landscape, the kind of thing that young German or Austrian men would have seen on their Grand Tour to Italy. Perhaps the traveler pictured on the cup is musing on the impermanence of the great civilization of Rome, which saw its heyday and then faltered. The set is in good condition, but shows some wear to the decoration, especially to the rims. The saucer has a tiny chip. The cup has a footrim chip, with a single hairline at the bottom of the handle (both shown).
