Fine porcelain and antiques of the 18th and 19th centuries
Here is a diminutive teapot that was produced right when the craze for tea was just starting to take hold in England. It is very well made, the lid fitting snugly, everything neatly potted, the handle and spout nicely proportioned to the body, and finely decorated in many enamel colors: puce, red, purple, yellow, green and black. Really a delight, and made by a very accomplished and artistic potter. One side portrays a large flower with a red center and splendid yellow petals, flanked by flowers and branches in various colors. The other side depicts a Chinese pheasant sitting on a rock set up in a Chinese garden, flanked by multicolored flowers matching the other side. The spout is molded like a thick branch, and the handle like a thinner branch, with the finial an even thinner branch, more like a twig. It has a label from the Price Glover Collection, which was sold at Christies’ in London on June 14, 1988.
The decoration resembles the scene on a bowl in the Weldon Collection (“A Passion for Pottery,” page 86). I can also refer you to the very similar teapot illustrated by Griselda Lewis in her book “A Collector’s History of English Pottery,” page 77. Like almost all teapots from this period, it is small—reflecting the price of the precious tea, which had to be imported from China—only six and one-quarter inches from tip of spout to handle, and three and one-half inches high. It is in excellent condition and shows no repairs under black light. The decoration and everything about this teapot is superb.
