Here is a fanciful antique Chinese-inspired British cup and saucer that are printed in black outline and then filled in by hand with color. These hand-painted Chinoiseries designs were all the rage in England in the 1820s and 1830s. The shape of this unique and rare handle seems to be identical to the one shown in illustration 401 in Berthoud’s book on cup shapes, but the factory making this shape hasn’t yet been identified. Condition is excellent. The saucer is five and three-quarters inches across.
