This antique porcelain plate is hand-painted in underglaze cobalt blue with a Chinoiseries scene that includes lotus and bamboo, surrounded by a diaper and scroll border. It is rather small, eight inches across, marked in blue with the painter’s number 15 on the reverse, in excellent original condition. There is an area of repainting confined to the back, probably to conceal a chip. This plate was almost certainly made at the Bow factory, but recent research into the factory at Isleworth has caused some rethinking. The identical pattern occurs there, as well as on some Delft wares produced in Liverpool. Some suggest that one of the potteries in Liverpool was experimenting with trials of hard-paste porcelain in this pattern, and microscopic analysis of similar wares confirms that it is closer to hard paste than the paste used at Bow. Whatever the source, the plate is a pleasure to look at, with microscope or not.
