Here is an example of the brilliant decoration that Spode designers excelled in during the early period. Pattern 967 was introduced in about 1807 and was immediately popular—and has remained so. It makes use of the Imari palette of predominantly cobalt blue, iron red and gold, here enhanced further with the solid gilding of the knob and handles. The lid is pierced to allow the scents of violet petals or other fragrances to spread through the room. I have a notion that the shape of these upright handles is earlier than the handles that are usually found, which are angled out slightly. I suspect this vertical form was more difficult to hold securely, and the angled handles were a later improvement that made them less likely to slip. I have two of these, listed separately since they didn’t start out together and they are slightly different in height. I’m including one photo showing them side by side, in case you want both. This one is two and five-eighths inches high at the top of the handles, and the other is slightly taller. The mark is in red. It is in perfect condition. The combined price if you want both pots is $1450, but contact me first so I can adjust the prices.
