This pair of plates with scalloped rims is seven and three-quarters inches across and has hand-painted decoration that matches exactly, panel for panel. The blue scale background sets off the gilding superbly and makes a stunning contrast with the white reserves that have been filled with colorful (and imaginary) birds and insects. Slight wear to the surface from use at the dinner table, but the decoration shows hardly any loss. Even the gilding is in near perfect condition. It’s hard to think of these dishes actually being used at dinnertime, but they were. I don’t think anyone would do that today.
