This unusual design, of oriental inspiration, features wild mythical beasts and flowers within blue and gilt cartouches reserved on diapered and cell-pattern grounds, divided into four sections around a central medallion. The backs are quite as fancifully decorated as the fronts. Derby came up with several designs that are unique to the factory and this is one of them. They marked this pattern with spurious Chinese reign marks rather than the normal factory mark. (But one of these dishes also bears an incised script N, which is a more familiar Derby mark.) Each is seven and a half by eight and a half inches. Condition is excellent, with nearly all the gilding intact.
