Trefoil saphiret cabochon and paste diamond contained within this base metal pin dating from the Edwardian period.
Saphiret glass was made in Gablonz, Czechoslovakia in the mid-19th century by mixing melted gold into sapphire-colored glass, the result was a glass which looks brick red or brown, which flashes vivid electric blue when moved in the light. Generally the darker the colour the older the glass. Jewellery containing saphiret dates Victorian, Edwardian or from the Arts & Crafts periods as early in the 20th century manufacturing stopped due to the increase in the price of gold making the glass no longer cost effective.
