This round 10 inch bread plate is one of several historical plates that were produced in memorial to President Garfield in the event of his untimely death in 1881, less than one year after his election. Garfield was elected president in 1880, was shot in July 1881 but did not die until September of that year, finally succumbing to infection and internal bleeding. The plate has a scalloped border with stippled wide inner band in which there are laurel leaves and the words MEMORIAL. The center has a bust of President Garfield. There are several tiny nicks on the raised inner edge along the rim of the plate from use and washing. There are no cracks or defacing chips. The glass is clear and there is no discoloration.
