This 5 page china painting study was produced in 1965 by Wanda Clapham, a well-known American china painter. The study details how to paint yellow roses on white china blanks. This study shows a completed painting, how to start the design and then there are two pages showing how the design could be put on other items. In this case it shows how to put this pattern onto an oblong platter and how to manipulate the design to use it as a border for three different plate designs. The 5th page of the study is a step by step instruction of putting the painting together with sequential firings to fix the colors layer by layer. Pages are standard 8 1/2 x 11 inches.

China painting was a popular hobby and cottage industry in the early 1900's with housewives gathering in clubs to paint china as a hobby. Talented women also painted items for sale to bolster their personal finances and many of these items are very beautiful and unsigned. The industry foundered during both World War I and II because of lack of available European fine porcelain blanks. In the late 1950's there was a resurgence in this hobby and during this time, artists such as Wanda Clapham capitalized on this new resurgence with instructional studies such as this one. Today there are still ceramic painting studios that provide blanks for recreational painting and team building exercises.
