This appears to be a salesman's sample demonstration razor. The razor is the Durham Duplex which is a hybrid of the straight razor and a safety razor. The razor is in the style of straight razors but it holds a long changeable blade. The razor has a black composition handle that is marked on one side, Durham Demonstrator Not to be Sold. On the other side the handle is marked To Be Used with Durham Duplex Blades. The steel head of the razor folds into the handle. The head is marked Pat. USA May 28, 07 And Foreign Countries. The other side of the head has the Durham crest and Durham Demonstrator. There is a blade in the head that appears to be in excellent condition. When fully extended, the razor is 8 1/2 inches long. When folded the razor is 5 3/4 inches long.
The razor came in a basic brown box not marked with any Durham markings. The lid is marked as if it could be a mailing box. There is an address in the upper left corner, Room 1100, 111 Fifth Avenue, New York. The middle and right of the box lid has three lines, presumably to fill in an address for mailing. The base of the box has a metal hook on each end to hold the lid securely in place during mailing. Only one hook remains intact. The end of the lid is marked EPT & B Co. Paper Boxes, 449 West St., New York. There is also a Union Bug on the left lower corner of the lid. The razor fits very nicely into the box as if it was supposed to house the razor.
