Mid Victorian combination walnut box in very good condition.
Measures approximately 13” x 9” x 8 ½”. Unspoilt patina. Attractive grain. Contrasting edge trim. No missing or replaced veneer.
Though antique combination boxes cannot be termed as being rare most tended to just feature a removable tray for sewing/needlework accessories and a writing slope. This particular example differs in terms of style, dimensions and has additional features.
Original inlaid brass cartouche and escutcheon. Original lock, key for decorative purposes only. Original inset brass handles. Lid closes square and true. The lid interior features the original bevel edged oval mirror set within a button pleated panel. All buttons are present, some wear through to the material in two corners. By way of the original twin sliding brass catches at the front of the box the front can be unfolded to reveal the original gilt and blind embossed leather writing surface. Please note that the leather is still fully intact across the fold line of the two sections…..a VERY rare feature of ANY antique writing box!! Immediately behind the writing platform is an office section featuring a stamp slope, removable dished pen tray with storage space beneath and what is quite possible the original inkpot in very good condition. In addition there is a small section to accommodate note paper and/or envelopes. All sections and dividers are original and complete. The main storage area of the box comprises of the original removable tray complete with all of the original dividers and side brass hoop handles. The tray would have accommodated various sewing/needlework accessories. Beneath the tray is a generous storage area that would have once held various threads etc or perhaps work in progress. Both the tray and storage area would be ideal for use as a jewellery box. The box has the quite unusual feature of having a side drawer…ideal for more items of jewellery. The sprung drawer is accessed not by removing a brass rod but by pressing down on the rod located to the left of the tray.
A fine item, of good quality build with unusual features that lends itself to a wide range of uses.
