Offering a stunning representation of the Westmoreland ‘Cherry & Cable’ cookie jar in the popular purple amethyst slag glass! This piece is all original and my Grandmother had obtained it from the well-known Los Angeles, CA carnival glass collector, Mr. C. B. Carroll during the early-1980’s (see last image). It is just beautiful from every angle, both inside and outside. The piece has a wonderful appeal displaying the shiny, deep amethyst purple that blends into a softer, matte lavender color that in turn fades into the opaque, white milk glass. A truly fantastic piece of slag glass that pays homage to the history of carnival glass.
*Brief History: The Westmoreland Glass Company was founded in 1890 and remained in production for nearly 100-years! The specific Westmoreland embossed mark on the bottom and inside the lid (see pics) is dated between 1940-1982. The white milk glass was incredibly popular between the 1920’s-1950’s. Then in about 1957 the combination of the milk glass added to other colors produced what we know as slag glass, and in 1963 the Cherry & Cable form was introduced. Therefore, this narrows the jar to the early-1960’s. Unfortunately, after decades of success, the company began to lose momentum in the 1970’s and Mr. Grossman purchase the company in 1981. However, even with his best efforts to revive the company consumers were moving away from the the former styles. So in January 1984 the factory shut down production, after nearly 100 years of production.
Measures approximately 8” tall (with lid), 8.5” wide (handle to handle), 5” wide diameter opening, and 4.75” diameter wide footing. Plus, it weighs nearly 5-lbs!
Condition is amazing! Just as it was the day it was created. The only detected flaw is a mini, 2mm x 3mm surface chip/scratch on bridge of the lid? You may notice in the images that there is a small indent inside the piece and a small iron red speckle on the outside near the base, but both of these are factory produced, like birthmarks. No instability, all is sound and original.
This carnival glass piece by the Westmoreland Company is ideal for the collector! If you don’t collect, then it is equally perfect for that person who enjoys eclectic pieces that have a functional purpose within their home. So get creative with how you can give this lidded jar a new purpose. Enjoy!
*NOTE: This piece will not fit inside a large flat rate box and requires ample padding.
