Offering a SCARCE and attractive ‘1978’ Iridescent Ice Green Carnival Glass, Souvenir / Commemorative Plate! This limited numbered plate is a specialized historical piece of art and is difficult to find at times. It was created for the Oakland Convention’s 9th Celebratory Anniversary of the Northern California Carnival Club (1969 - 1978). Therefore, only produced for the members (so I was told). Robert Wetzel made only four souvenir commemorative plates for the Northern California Carnival Glass Club between 1978 – 1981.
The iridescent ice green carnival glass plate reads: "N.C.C.C. Oakland Calif 1978 Golden Gate Bridge", depicts the embossed golden gate bridge in the center, and with a garland of roses around the border; plus, hidden within the pattern on the front of each plate is the mark of WETZEL.
This Souvenir Plate was produced by the R. Wetzel Glass Company. The Company was created by Robert and Vicki Wetzel of Zanesville, Ohio. Robert was a former mold maker for the Anchor Glass Company and transferred his skills and knowledge into the works of his own company. Wetzel glass was opened in 1974 and later retired their doors a short 14 years later in 1988. Their main production was press ware items; such as, salt dips, toothpicks and small novelty pieces. However, they also made beautifully hand formed paperweights. They even used the desired iridized technique for some pieces.
Measures 8-3/8”(21cm) diameter and .75”(2cm) deep. Weighs 14 oz.
Condition is pristine! This mint plate has zero detected flaws. (All pictures taken in natural lighting, and because of the subtly delicate colors the pictures don’t do it justice!)
This is a truly stunning piece of glass art with a specialized, Northern California region commemorative purpose for those serious collectors.
