Moroccan Artisan Made Hanging Ball Lantern. The lantern is in silver colored metal with a hand cut découpé design of miscellaneous shapes. The two halves of the ball are hinged together and fasten with a revolving latch closure. The lantern hangs from acrylic fishing wire which is invisible so the ball appears to be magically suspended (see photo.). A tea light inside casts mysterious shadows as the light is filtered through the cut out shapes, these are enhanced by slight movements or rotations of the ball. The lantern originates from Morocco and dates to the late 19th century. It is in excellent condition and the metal has developed a wonderful patina with age and use.
It can be used indoors to create a cosy, exotic glow, evocative of a Bedouin tent or Moorish interior. It is suitable for outdoor lighting for a veranda or garden protected from the wind. It could also be used as an incense burner.
