Art Deco FRANK BROS. Diamond Paste Shoe Buckle. The buckle is marked on the back FRANK BROS. and with a makers mark and SILVEROID. It is 1.75 inches (4.5 cm) by 1.25 inches (3 cm). It dates from circa 1920, in good condition with no stones missing.
Frank Bros. was established in San Antonio, Texas in 1868 by the brothers Gerson, Emil and Sol. It was famous as a gentlemens' outfitters and also sold military uniforms, badges, medals and buttons. It was sold in 1963 and ceased trading in 1995. The photograph above, taken in the early 1900s, shows the shop in Commerce Street where this buckle would have been purchased.
Silveroid, otherwise known as German Silver was invented in the 1860s or 1870s and was first used for watch cases. It is a metal which has stood the test of time and retains it's silvery appearance with minimal tarnish. It was eventually superseded by stainless steel.
A lovely buckle with a history for a collector which could be worn to great effect today as a choker on a black velvet ribbon.
