Measuring 3” long, this cicada brooch is likely French and made of either Lucite or a milk-based plastic called Galalith. It is smooth on the back and carved on the top. The carving is very well done. It was probably produced in the 1960s due to its modern safety clasp. The cicada (or cigale in French) is a mascot in the Provence region of France and a symbol of good luck while the cicada symbolized death and rebirth to the ancient Greeks. It is 1 ¼” wide and in very good to excellent vintage condition.
