Collectors of the rare and unusual and circus lovers unite! There over 32 pieces in this imaginative and whimsical handmade circus. It was made exclusively for the Chicago Marshall Fields store in the mid to late 1940s or very early 1950s. It was made so the buyer could purchase the figures individually and create his/her own circus. A few pieces have the original sales stickers.

The labels indicate it was made in California and was conceptualized by Jean Le Seyeux (1894-1957) a French artist, director, songwriter, and costume/set designer. Each piece is constructed of wood that has been hand-painted—some have leather-like embellishments. The circus rings are formed from paper. Some "acrobat" figures were designed to stand on their feet or their hands and to make a pyramid as high as 3-figures high. The average size of the people figures is about 4” wide by 5 1/2” high.

Here is a partial list of what is included in the set: 9 animals; 10 training props for animals; 13 assorted clowns, trainers, musicians, and vendors; two 20” diameter circus rings; plus one 10” wide by 14” high by 4/12” deep wooden spectator’s gallery with four half-people figures.

Condition...because it was handmade well over 70 years ago, it needs some restoration. The stars, for instance, (shown on the spectator's gallery) are those old foil stick-on stars. They need replacement in some areas. Some faces will require a touch-up. Some of the fabric/leather needs replacement or restoration. This set was made for collectors only and was probably never meant to be a child's toy.

It will require very careful and meticulous packing and shipping, therefore shipping costs and insurance are to be determined. Each piece would need to be wrapped individually then each placed in its own box before placing into one large outer shipping box. Right now, the figures are attached to a piece of cardboard to keep them flat and secure for storage purposes but they are so rare and unusual, they really need to be on display in a loving environment.
