This is a fine example of a 17th C. firefighter's axe from the Japanese Edo period. These were mainly used by Samurais and Ninjas as weapons. Appears to be made of iron and bamboo. Length is 21-1/2". Condition is very good consistent with age.
This comes from an estate belonging to a local resident whose deceased family member collected Japanese antiques while stationed in Japan for the U.S. government during the 1920s.
