This is a great vintage Italian Majolica "Certosa Di Firenze" Pilgrim Flask. The flask is beautifully moulded with four small handles decorated with floral medallions (in the Renaissance style of Grottesche (Raffaellesco)) and a crowned double headed eagle. It is hand painted in vibrant colors and and finished with a majolica glaze. Chartreuse, Liquor Certosino, is a liquor made at the Certosa monastery and bottled in this vessel in the early to mid 20th century.

Certosa refers specifically to the monastaries of the Carthusian order of monks founded originally in France in the 11th Century. The Certosa di Firenze of Florence (Galluzzo) was built in Italy during the 15th Century. The Carthusian monks are famous around the world for their Chartreuse liquor made from a secret recipe.

Marked: Embellishments are scratched into the pottery including a Certosa di Firenze insigniain the center medallion. Paper labels include: "DISTILLERIA P.P. CERTOSINI..." (see photo) and cork sticker"...Liquor Certosino...(see photo)
