A rare set of four different 19th century botanical engravings by Maitland-Smith, featuring the exquisite work of the Belgian botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté. The engravings are identically framed and matted in leather. They are marked Maitland-Smith in the back and have been produced in the Philippines, which means that they were made in the early 1980s since Maitland-Smith moved its base to the Philippines in 1981. Whereas the featured hand-colored engravings date back to the 19th century. Please note age-related foxing and spotting on the engravings - look at the pictures carefully.

Each framed engraving measures:

Height: 18.5".
Width: 15.5".
Depth: 1".

Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) was a Belgian botanical painter and royal floral painter. He was particularly famous for his highly detailed watercolors of various flowers, such as roses and lilies. Many of his paintings were reproduced in the 19th century as colored engravings. Redouté was often nicknamed "the Raphael of flowers" and is considered one the greatest botanical illustrators.
