An intriguing vintage porcelain veilleuse & brule-parfum (nightlight & perfume/incense burner) by the highly regarded Art Deco sculptor Demetre H. Chiparus, made for Editions Etling Paris (early 20th c). The orientalist sculpture depicts a young Arab woman in a purple and white burqa, sitting on a pile of floor cushions. Only her eyes are showing, yet she exudes such grace and elegance. The Arabian beauty holds a baskets with flowers to each side, which serves as the perfume/incense holder. The small light placed inside would shine through the translucent porcelain while slowly warming the perfume, allowing the scent to diffuse into the air. The color of the painted enamel is a very pleasant powder purple, with some pink shading to her chest. Signed in red script to the side "Chiparus" and to the bottom "France Editions Etling Paris" within a triangle. Guaranteed to be an original by D.H. Chiparus, made for the firm of Edmond Etling. As Chiparus made very few porcelain pieces, they are extremely collectible. This is one of the rarest models, acquired in France from the home of a private collector. Don't miss out on this spectacular example and ironclad investment, you will not find another!

Condition: Excellent, original condition with no damages or repairs.

Measurements: 8 in high x 5 3/4 in wide x 5 3/4 in deep (20 cm x 14.5 cm x 14.5 cm)

Demetre Haralamb Chiparus (1886-1947) was a Romanian sculptor who lived and worked in Paris. His high fashion Art Deco style drew from the Russian Ballet, French theatre, and an interest in Egypt and orientalism. He mainly worked in bronze, and occasional produced porcelain figures. A majority of his works were produced through the Editions Etling Paris foundry, and fetch exorbitant prices at auction today (including sculptures that have sold for up to $1 million at Sotheby's).

Edmond Etling is one of the most respected editors of early 20th c sculpture, having worked in bronze, glass, and ceramics. Etling edited works by some of the most well respected Art Deco sculptors (including Chiparus, Colinet, and Le Faguays). Works produced under his direction were of the highest quality, and are extremely desirable in today's market. Etling and his family perished at the hands of the Nazis during the second world war, and the foundry did not survive.
