About the artist:
Josef Lorenzl (1 September 1892 Vienna - 15 August 1950 Vienna) is one of the most highly regarded of the Deco sculptors, working around the same period as Ferdinand Preiss and Demetre Chiparus. His sculptures feature the modern woman - slender and elegant, with long legs and flowing forms. He produced in bronze, spelter, and ceramic. Though many of his works were unsigned, his style is unmistakable. Upon his death, his wife Anna destroyed a very large number of his figures. It is not certain why she did so, but her act made Lorenzl's sculptures harder to find and more valuable (in addition to the many models, molds, and records lost, destroyed, and melted down between the wars).
