This is one of the most impressive 19th Century FRENCH EMPIRE dore bronze inkstands you will ever find with huge full figured eagle standing on the top of the lid mounted above a large Baccarat square swirled glass inkwell. This stunning inkwell sits on a fitted dore bronze elaborately decorated inkstand/tray with raised gallery in the center that holds the inkwell. The glass inkwell is larger than normal and is made of heavy Baccarat crystal in a swirled ribbed pattern. The top of the inkwell is fitted with a wide engraved bronze collar with hinged lid decorated with a standing open-wing eagle on top. The hinge is tight and the lid opens and closes correctly on the inkwell. The square bronze inkstand/tray has an elaborate 1" wide pierced decorated border and recessed area around the four sides of the pierced gallery which can be used as a pen tray. The tray is stamped on the bottom "Reg. No. 80018" and has a punch stamp in the center top with initials "E P".
Dimensions: Bronze inkstand measures 1" high (at sides) and is 9 1/4" square. Stand weighs 3 pounds. The glass inkwell alone measures 3" high and 4 3/4" wide. Inkwell including the bronze top weighs 6.9 pounds. Overall height of inkwell with stand as shown is almost 9". Combined weight is just under 10 pounds.
Condition: The bronze is in excellent condition with no noted flaws. The Baccarat glass inkwell is free of any problems around the top although it has some minor roughness below one corner about 1" down the side that can be felt but is barely noticed. There is a more severely damaged spot at the base of one of the swirled ribs on the bottom of the glass, however, this is completely hidden by the fitted decorative gallery that holds the inkwell in place.
