This listing is for a beautiful antique Sterling Silver swing handle sugar basket with pierced design and fitted cobalt glass liner, c. 1900. The body of this nice sugar basket has a pierced design surrounding the mid-section, has a pedestal base and a swing handle engraved with floral decoration. The cobalt glass liner is original to the silver. The base of the silver basket is marked "Harris & Shafer Co., Sterling, 3 1/2 Pint, 4480/88"2532". Harris & Shafer were in business in Washington DC from 1880-1938. Sugar baskets began to be replaced in the early 19th Century when sugar bowls became popular. These delicate baskets have never lost their popularity with collectors and are highly collected today.
Dimensions: 3 3/4" high (at bowl) and 6" high (with handle up), the top diameter is 3 5/8" and the base is 2 1/2" in diameter. The sterling basket weighs 105 grams and combined weight with the liner is 8.8 ounces.
Condition: This lovely sugar basket is in excellent Estate condition with no noted flaws and reflecting only minimal signs of normal wear. The glass liner is free of chips, cracks or repairs.
