This rare French Crystal newel post finial or BOULE D'ESCALIER was probably made by Baccarat, c. 1900. These wonderful finials were used at the bottom of a staircase on the newel post and are generally very difficult to find. This one is made of two layers of cased glass with the cranberry glass surface cut back in "windows" which reflects a beehive of windows throughout the glass. There is also a multi-cut star at the top. The finial has a clear glass panel cut pedestal base which is mounted onto a circular brass base that attaches to the newel post.
Dimensions: 6 1/4" high (including base), 4" (at widest) with the base measuring 2 3/8" in diameter. Weighs 1.8 pounds.
Condition: Glass is in excellent Estate condition with no noted flaws. There is some slight cloudiness in the interior surface of four windows with the brass base having naturally aged patina although the bottom plate of the base is missing. These newel post finials can still be used as originally intended, however, they are currently more generally used as paperweights.
