This unusual 19th Century French Palais Royal novelty vanity top ladies pocket watch stand features a dainty ormolu gilt brass frame with turquoise glass back and hinged beveled glass front door. Inside the door is an attached brass bezel framed holder to showcase the decorative pocket watch. This nice stand dates from the Grand Tour era in the last quarter of the 19th Century. The interior watch holder will hold up to a 1 1/4" diameter watch which will display comfortably within the brass bezel frame. Novelty vanity items were popular at shops on the Palais Royal when wealthy travelers visited Paris during the Grand Tour era and were often purchased as souvenirs. This pocket watch holder is a wonderful example of such items.
Dimensions: 5" high, 2 3/4" wide (at bottles) and 2" deep (at base of stand). The oval glass front measures 2 7/8" high and 1 3/4" wide. Weighs 5.2 ounces.
Condition: This lovely pocket watch holder is in excellent Estate condition with no noted flaws although there is wear to the gilding from normal use. The glass is perfect with no chips or cracks.
