This lovely 19th Century French Palais Royal novelty vanity top ladies pocket watch stand features a bronze frame, mother of pearl ring holder and hand painted porcelain dish mounted as the back to display a pocket watch. The stand is mounted onto a thin flat alabaster base. This decorative stand dates from the Grand Tour era in the last quarter of the 19th Century. The interior watch holder will hold up to a 1 3/4" diameter watch which will display comfortably within the brass bezel frame. Novelty vanity items were popular at shops on the Palais Royal when wealthy travelers visited Paris during the Grand Tour era and were often purchased as souvenirs. This pocket watch holder is a nice example of such items.
Dimensions: 5 1/2" high with the base measuring 3 1/2" long, 2 1/4" wide and 3/8" deep. Weighs 5.9 ounces.
Condition: This nice pocket watch holder is in excellent Estate condition with no noted flaws although the patina of the bronze has darkened slightly with age.
