This listing is for a colorful 19th Century GRIFFIN, SMITH & HILL (GSH) American Etruscan Majolica DAISY compote, c. 1879-1889. This lovely compote features a design that alternates molded daisies in pastel pink and pale yellow with green foliage on a vibrant blue background. The interior of the compote is a mauve-pink color. Marked with a hand enameled "54" in black on base and incised "GHS" for GRIFFIN, SMITH & HILL inside stem. GRIFFIN, SMITH & HILL (GHS) Majolica is the most famous and most collected of the American companies making Majolica during the period 1879-1889. This compote is pictured on page 100 of the book "MAJOLICA" by MIKE SCHNEIDER. Also pictured on page 22 of the book "MAJOLICA POTTERY" First Edition by MARIANN K. MARKS.
Dimensions: 5 1/4" high with a top diameter of 9 1/8" and base diameter of 4 3/8". Weighs 2.0 pounds.
Condition: The compote is in very good Estate condition although there is a small chip on upper interior edge and some glaze omission on interior of bowl (see photos). No other noted damage or flaws.
