19th C. French Limoges enamel on copper vase painted with courting couple wearing Period costume with elaborately decorated background, signed "T S" for French artist Theophile Soyer. The background is painted in soft and muted sunset colors with flowers, trees and a cottage by a lake. Etched "945" on base with "T S" found on front below hem of ladies gown. The interior of the vase is a vivid metallic burgundy-wine color under the glaze.
Measures: 5 1/2" high with a maximum width of 2 3/4", 2 3/4" in diameter at top and 2" in diameter at base. Weighs 6.2 ounces.
Condition: Vase is in excellent Estate condition with no flaws or repairs
Theophile Soyer is listed as an important enamel painter who did historic subjects. He was born near Paris in the early 19th Century and exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1870. Enamels painted by Soyer are considered some of the finest quality 19th Century enamels. Soyer is most famous for his exquisite plaques which bring very high prices when they become available.
