This listing is for a gorgeous Sterling Silver mesh handbag by R. Blackinton & Co. decorated with chased decoration of Art Nouveau lady with flowing hair and doves, c. 1890-1910. The elaborately decorated frame is the same on both sides and has a finger ring and chain attached to facilitate carrying. Frame is marked Sterling on both the front and back interior just below clasp with the trademark stamp of R. Blackinton & Co. in business in North Attleboro MA from 1862-1967. Finger ring is also stamped Sterling.
Dimensions: Handbag measures 6 1/2" long from top of frame (not including clasp) to bottom of mesh (not including silver tassels) and 4" wide with the chain having a 3 1/2" drop (including finger ring). Total length of handbag is 10". The mesh section of the bag measures 5 1/4" long and 3 3/4
wide. Weighs 170 grams.
Condition: This unusual bag is in very good to excellent Estate condition. The frame is in excellent condition with interlocking ball closure which opens and closes freely and holds the frame together tightly. Mesh is also in very good condition although there is one missing round link at the top that connects mesh to frame and one missing round link in center bottom that connects the front of the mesh to the back panel. There may have been a silver hanging tassel in the bottom center of the bag, however, it looks fine as is with the two matching tassels on each side. I didn't find any other flaws on the handbag which is in original as found condition and could possibly use polishing, if desired.
