Purchased from an advanced collector of wooden duck decoys, this nice example of a red-breasted MERGANSER decoy was made by Davison (Dave) Hawthorne of Salisbury MD. This attractive decoy has nicely painted features with an alert head, tack eyes and fine head comb with its original lead weight and line tie. Decoy is mounted onto a wooden stand and is signed on the bottom of the stand "Dave Hawthorne, Salisbury MD". Although we are not decoy collectors, this decoy had such personality I fell in love with it. If you have any specific questions regarding this decoy that we have not addressed, please inquire and I will do my best to respond to any concerns.

Dimensions: 8 1/2" high (on stand as shown), 15 3/4" long (beak to tail) and 4 1/2" wide. Stand measures 7 1/2" long, 4" wide and 1/2" deep. Weighs just under 2 pounds mounted on stand.

Condition: Decoy has excellent paint although at some time it was repainted for the original owner by Mr. Hawthorne. These decoys were certainly made to be used and considering this, the decoy appears to be in really good condition reflecting normal wear especially to the tip of the tail. The head was carved separately and there is an exposed line where the head is attached. The lower body of the decoy has been cut out to hold the mounting post and there is a crack extending from metal line tie upward toward the neck area. Still, this decoy is quite attractive and makes a nice presentation worthy of any duck decoy collection.

Information regarding Davison Hawthorne: Mr. Hawthorne was born in 1924 and lived in Salisbury MD where he was well known among the local decoy carvers and collectors. Mr. Hawthorne was himself a blue ribbon carver and knowledgeable collector who owned an antiques and decoy shop in Salisbury. He produced fine bird carvings and often served as a judge at early decoy carving competitions. He has been featured in numerous publications and magazines such as the Duck Collector Guide, Sporting Collector's Handbook and North American Decoys magazine. He has been credited with guiding many decoy collectors in building advanced collections.
