This listing is for a stunning French dore bronze lidded casket box from the Grand Tour era, c. 1880. This lovely box/container has an engraved and enamel decorated lid with Pietra Dura medallion on center top. The Pietra Dura (inlaid marble) medallion is fitted in a bronze bezel with bronze rope chain around the bezel. The outside edge is also decorated with the rope chain with a blue enamel band bordered on each side with a white band on outside border with an engraved design between the enamel and the medallion. The cylinder shaped body sits on a concave wide base with a rope chain around the top and bottom edge. The box is lined with a black leather type lining and the lid is lined with a deep purple velvet. This box would most likely have been originally purchased by a wealthy traveler to Paris during the last quarter of the 19th Century.
Dimensions: 4 3/4" high (as shown with lid in place) with a 6" diameter top and 7" diameter base. Combined weight is 3.9 pounds.
Condition: This fabulous bronze box is in very good to excellent Estate condition with no major flaws and reflecting only minor signs of normal wear. There is one small area on the inside base lining that has some damage at the top edge and there is some missing Pietra Dura inlay on the stems of the flowers in top Medallion that is not obvious upon normal inspection. The box does have normally aged patina showing expected wear.
