The John Frederics label was a partnership of John Pico Harberger (a/k/a "John Pico John" or "Mr. John") and Frederic Hirst. The Coty awards gave John-Frederics a special award for millinery in 1943. When Mr. John and Frederic Hirst dissolved their partnership in 1948, Mr. John formed the Mr. John label. Frederic Hirst kept the John-Frederics label and also designed hats as "Mr. Fred." After the split Mr. Fred did not fare as well as Mr. John. John-Frederics was mentioned and/or advertised in fashion magazines in the 1920s through the 1950s. John Frederics Charmer hats were advertised in 1950s magazines, after Mr. John left the label. The Philadelphia Museum of Art has 20 hats in its on-line collection, including examples before and after the partnership split. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has 44 hats, including this innovative turban made of wool yarn and beads circa 1937-41, a turban made of twisted straw braid and silk circa 1940 (and a variation in different colors), an amazing medieval inspired toque with donut shapes dripping with fringe circa 1941, and a spangled snood circa 1942. Labels: John Frederics Made to Order, John Frederics, John Frederics Charmer (less expensive line), "Sweet Young Things" "Miss Frederics."
