A visually stunning, incredible Victorian Whitby Jet cameo brooch, circa 1860.
The workmanship is outstanding and could easily be an unsigned Speedy (there is a small chip to base of neck where his signature would typically be).
Large in size and unusually, navette shaped, it is very much like a large eye; the superb relief cameo portrait sits in profile to the centre, almost like the iris.
The brooch has a deep, smooth polished outer frame top and bottom like thick eyelids and each end has an open section with large raised leaves that protrude out onto top of frame.
Whether it is indeed a Speedy or not, it is magnificently carved.
I have never seen another example like this, in over 20 years of collecting and adoring Whitby Jet.
Original brass pin plate to back with brooch fittings in good order.
Measurements: 2.5" wide by 1.5" with a raised central depth of 0.75".
In good antique condition; a couple of the teeniest fleabites meeting base of neck where small surface chip underneath, nothing to detract from this outstanding piece.
