A wonderful Victorian scarab beetle brooch with gem set eyes.
During the 19th/early 20th century, jewellery with Egyptian themes was hugely popular following archaeological digs discovering tombs of Pharaohs.
The scarab beetle is claw mounted in a gilt metal brooch frame, with legs and antennae; the eyes are a pink gemstone and set off the piece beautifully. The shell is in very good condition for the great age and you can see the base through the open back brooch setting.
The piece has been left uncleaned as preferred by many buyers of antique jewellery.
Measurements: 22mm by 18mm with a depth of 8mm.
Fastens with the typical Victorian pin and 'c' catch.
Having seen a great many Egyptian Revival pieces from the late 19th/early 20th century, this is one of the nicest brooch examples I have come across. It will enhance any collection.
