A most unusual 19th century mourning chatelaine, with attached large fob locket and watch chain.
The gilt metal chatelaine has an embossed angel with large wings and outstretched arms; there is a hook to the base, from which is suspended the (removable) fob locket. The back of the angel has a redundant hinge, possibly from where a past clip fitting has been lost.
The long watch chain is attached to the angel via two side loops; the two chains meet at a central link which then becomes one chain with a dog clip at the end. These chains have unusual links that are heavily textured with deep grooves.
The gilt metal fob locket has an engine turned case with vacant cartouche inside a belt to the front and forget me nots inside a belt to the back. Contained within is an ambrotype of a woman dressed in heavy black mourning attire. She has a glass cover.
Measurements: 18.5" full length from top of dog clip to base of fob locket; the angel chatelaine fitting alone is 2" by 1" (including hook); the fob locket is 2" by 1 3/8" (including hoop).
In good antique condition; some traces of verdigris to angel & indentation to back of locket case; engine turned detail is rubbed with age.
Such a wonderful piece, with the guardian angel watching over the lost loved one. I have never seen another like it.
