A wonderful & unusual Arts and Crafts brooch from the dawn of the 20th century.
Pewter fronted and mounted with an operculum (taken from a fresh water/marine snail).
Jewellery set with opercula had become very popular during the Victorian era; shaped like a cabochon, with an eye like appearance, the operculum was often known as 'Cats Eye' or 'Shiva's Eye'. It is interesting to see this Arts & Crafts example, which I have never seen before.
Measurements: 32mm by 20mm.
Period pin and 'c' catch in good working order.
In good antique condition; a great collectors brooch and talking piece in wear!!
