A superb & rare mid Victorian Whitby Jet mourning brooch, c1860.
Large in size; completely hand carved by a 19th century jet worker; made to mourn the loss of a mother.
I have seen many jet bar brooches with 'mother' on, in years of collecting, but never a brooch of this size and quality.
I bought this piece in Whitby itself and was told it came from an old local family who had owned it for a great many years...inherited from a great grandmother. It may well have been a commission piece at the time but I cannot confirm this.
Base metal oval pin plate with period brooch fittings to back, may be an antique replacement.
Measurements: 2" by 1 5/8".
In good antique condition: as shown in photos.
A perfect brooch for antique Whitby Jet collectors or a wonderful memorial piece for someone. It would be difficult to find a similar example.
