A beautiful, large & most unusual late Victorian silver locket, c1900.
A superb antique souvenir piece of Malta, storing the precious hair of 2 loved ones; perhaps Malta held a specific significance for this family?
No marks but the outer case has been tested.
The case is extremely well made by a skilled silversmith of the time, with faceted rim and elaborate design both front and back.
A dark blue enamelled cartouche with MALTA in silver lettering has scrolling above and below, against an engine turned sunken background.
The back has a silver cartouche with the Maltese cross, again in dark blue enamelling & with the same engine turned backdrop.
Inside the locket are two compartments containing 2 different lots of human hair, brown and blonde. They have silver metal frames and glass retainers.
The locket case snaps securely shut and has a chunky silver metal jump ring.
Measurements: the locket case is 35mm by 27mm (excluding fittings/rings).
In good antique condition; some marks to dark enamel background & small nibbles to glass retainers, commensurate with age & use.
