A wonderful Victorian 'Faith, Hope & Charity' mourning brooch, in carved black onyx.
Faith, hope and charity represent the three theological virtues that God puts into the soul. Believers must live their lives according to these virtues to be worthy of eternal life; the Victorians very much adhered to this and it was popularly reflected in their jewellery.
Features an artfully arranged cross, anchor and heart; they look to be gold settings (but are untested) and are encrusted with seed pearls, symbolic of tears (one is missing to cross).
Heavily gilded oval pin plate with tube hinge, pin and 'c' catch to fasten.
Measurements: 39mm by 15mm.
In good antique condition; small conchoidal fracture to back at one end.
