A stunning, very large, early-mid Victorian Whitby Jet brooch.
Hand carved by the jet worker in a large deep oval with scalloped rim; interestingly this is an early example where a long groove was carved into the back of the jet, in order to inlay a pin. Later brooches all had pin plates or stuck on metal mounts for hinges and 'c' catches.
After the interesting back, we get to the lovely front!!
An engraved solid silver (tested) raised mount sits in the centre; this is set with a trio of shell cameos. The cameos are possibly a later addition but they suit the piece very well and both outer cameo profiles are looking inwards, as they should.
Measurements: 2.5" by 1.75".
In good antique condition: there is some residual old glue around the pin fitting commensurate with having been reset at some point, also some scratches to jet above it; some traces of a clear glue around the cameos are also noted.
A very dramatic, statement piece brooch that looks incredible in wear!!
