Beautiful old patterned and inlaid wood box. it is in the deco style, probably from the orient, and to me it looks like it was supposed to be a cigarette box. yes, it seems short, but remember that in those days the did not come with filters on them so cigarettes were shorter (and more "lethal").
It measures 8 1/2" long and 3 1/4" wide. The top rolls around the box to serve as a lid for closing. There are 2 compartments inside the box and 2 small pieces that are from the top having come off. The workmanship is beautiful and quite light weight. I see no visible marks on it as to country of origin. This came out of a dentists office (of all things) who had been ion practice since the 1920's before retiring. The buyer of his practice got this with the office when he bought is in the very early 1970's and I got it from him.
