From an old IOWA collection comes this SUPER RARE storybook doll, the very early Harlequin Clown. As I am no expert on these dolls, I had it appraised by be very good friend, the late Ray Radley who had helped co-author the second (encyclopedia) book on Story Book Dolls. He checked it over (this was back in 2008) and concluded it was COMPLETELY ORIGINAL!
Now I am aware that it does not have the white shoes but the black shoes so as I said before I had it appraised by him. I got it out of a very old collection and I dare say I am only the 3rd owner of this doll. I have the information and, except for the name of the original owner, the provenance of this doll which I will put into writing for you the buyer. The keeper of the collection, and former owner, had gotten it from the original owner after she died and it all had been packed away for well over 20 years before I saw it for the first time in 1995. I bought out mostly the china and parian dolls which is what I collect and this was bought later on around 1999. I have had it ever since and had just kept it carefully in my collection so I know of it's originality.
As it is, this may be the ONLY black shoed example ever made: of that I simply am not sure. I just know that she is totally original as I got her and the woman who owned her was an old spinster who had plenty of her own money and collected dolls for decades until she died. The collection reflected that as there were almost no bisque head dolls but LOTS of china, parian, papier mache', and wax dolls which was typical of collections back in the 1940's and 1950's. It stood to reason because collectors back then wanted the dolls their mothers and grandmothers had played with, NOT the bisque head "dolly dolls" they had played with. I know this because I stared collecting in 1965 and that is exactly what all doll collectors at that time were looking for as well.
Doll stands 5 1/2" tall, 7" up to the tip of the hat, and though it is not original I will include the signed Storybook doll stand I have her in. Both the legs and arms are movable and the eyes a beautiful painted teal blue. I will pay the shipping but you will have to figure out what insurance will cost you, should you wish to take it, and include that with your order. Thanks for looking and ask any questions you may have!
