Wonderful old china head doll with the name marked on the front. Marion is part of the Name series of china head dolls which, of course, were made by the Hertwig company. This wonderful example is 19" tall and on a very nice old body. It has the leather arms and hands and boots for the feet. It also has the pronounced seat on the back which I always have heard is called the "round seat" type of body. Since I have been collecting china head dolls since 1965 that might be an old term not used much anymore. The head is perfect and very well painted. Some of the gold trim has rubbed off but it still retains plenty of it left. The era of when this doll was made is from the late 1890's to the WWI period. That is about a 20 year span but it is hard to actually place any closer of a date on these name dolls. The back of the shoulder plate has the marking "Patent App For" and the word GERMANY below that. The dress is a replacement but the doll does have nice old underclothes which possibly might be original to the doll.
OOPS! Just found 1 tear on the left wrist by the hand. I have old leather here from my doll hospital supplies and will patch it for you.
This is out of a friends mothers estate so ask me any questions you might have!
