An elaborate Victorian mourning cape, made in England C1860's, it is an early mourning piece designed for outerwear.
It is made from thick ribbed Bombazine fabric, the front being longer than the back to accommodate a bustle to the back.
It has been trimmed in black lace and adorned heavily with faceted black glass beads and cut steel beads, there is a lot of detailing to both the front and the back.
The Cape is more fitted than others and fastens with hook and eye fasteners concealed down the front and internally has a ribbon waist tie.
It has a lace ruffle around the neck and fits close to the neck.
Good condition overall, signs of use and wear commensurate with age, some lace is coming away at the edge this is easily fixed though, a small dent like mark to the chest, not a tear but worn.
Approx measurements:
33.5" length at the front
27" length at the back
42" bust
30" waist
14" shoulder to shoulder
